Collaborative Minds Academy

For Research Managers

You are a community manager, project manager, programme manager, grant writer or policy officer. You support researchers working together. For example, in the context of an inter- or transdisciplinary, inter-faculty or inter-institutional collaboration. A very fun and challenging job! But sometimes also a difficult one.

The Collaborative Minds Academy offers a combination of theory, skills and insight into your own role. Applied to your situation and specific to the academic setting.

Do you want to get to know the Academy?

You

  • feel like you have to keep all the balls at once in the air on your own
  • often have to reinvent the wheel
  • do not have anyone to turn to for advice about how to deal with difficult situation
  • feel alone sometimes
  • are the contact person for the collaboration, a spider in the web, but therefore also the one who gets all the less fun things on his/her plate
  • have the feeling that you are always busy balancing all interests and encouraging people to do their tasks
  • are regularly asked to prepare meetings and events
Collaboration across disciplines and organisations is increasingly important to make scientific and/or societal impact. Unfortunately, it is too often assumed that people can do this naturally, the skills are classified as ‘soft’, and little attention is paid to them. A shame! Because by increasing your knowledge and skills in this area, you can significantly improve the collaborations you support.

You want

  • to have more control over difficult situations in the collaborations you support
  • or even better: to prevent those difficult situations
  • more security in your role and position with respect to the researchers
  • to feel that you are not alone
  • more hands-on tools to design productive and interactive meetings and events
  • to ensure that visions, strategies and goals are designed jointly
  • to learn to deal with different interests and motives
  • to design a process with the right balance between involving all stakeholders and meeting your deadlines
  • to ensure that all voices are heard, not just the loudest one
By increasing your understanding of how collaborations actually ‘work’, practising your collaboration skills and reflecting on your role, you can improve the impact of the collaboration and thus the scientific or societal impact of your work. This is how you can make a large difference! The Collaborative Minds Academy will give you the foundation to do so.

Theory

Learn how collaboration ‘works’

Increasing your impact on the collaborations you support starts with understanding how collaborations actually “work”. Over the years, I have studied scientific and popular literature on collaboration and (science) teams from different disciplines and thinking frames (e.g. Deep Democracy, organisational science, science of team science and group dynamics).

What you will get

I have 6 self-paced theoretical modules in the pipeline with assignments and access to Q&A sessions.

Skills

Practice collaborative skills and gain hands-on tools for meetings

Designing a productive and constructive meeting (or agenda), organising and facilitating an interactive and productive event, constructively intervening in the group collaborative process or designing a complex process with many stakeholders. You have a wide range of tasks as Research Manager. Through those, you can steer the collaborations you support.

What you will get

  • A 2-day in-company training in which you:
    • get to know and learn to facilitate hands-on conversation and workshop methods for interactive and productive meetings
    • practice collaborative skills, such as listening and observing
    • learn about inclusive decision-making
    • learn how to design meetings and processes (80% of success is in the preparation!)
    • and above all: learn from and with each other
  • With special attention for your role as Research Manager in supporting a PI, (vice-)dean, scientific director, Board or consortium.
Your investment is € 4500,- for an in-company training course with a minimum of 6 people.
This course is also available as a short half-day masterclass for € 1250,-.

Reflection

Reflection on your role, position and approach

Do you recognise yourself in this?

  • You are in need of a sparring partner
  • You feel alone in your approach and/or decisions in a complex situation or ecosystem
  • You are looking for a deeper understanding of your role, position and responsibility towards your team or the scientists you support
  • You find yourself in a difficult situation and you need to talk about it with a peer and determine your next steps
For a more in-depth discussion of your specific case(s) and/or situation(s) I offer 1-on-1 sessions. Of course, I use all the knowledge and skills from the theoretical modules and the skills course/master class. An extra aspect of these 1-on-1 sessions is that I use methods from the systemic way of working to map your situation or case. In that way, I let you discover new perspectives or solutions.

What you will get

  • As many 1-on-1 sessions (face-2-face) as you want, at a pace that suits you.
  • Feedback or contact in between sessions, by email, whats-app or phone.
  • Insights, new perspectives and previously unimagined solutions for your specific situation.
  • A sparring partner and peer with knowledge of and experience in supporting scientists in an academic setting.
  • A deeper understanding of your role and responsibilities (and their limits).
Your investment is €180,- for each 60-minute session (but another session length is also possible).
As team leader, you can also opt for a subscription for 1-on-1 sessions with all your team members, or a peer-to-peer session with your team with a pre-determined theme.
